Boating Fashion Tips

Be Fashionable and Comfortable on Your Boat Rental

Dressing for Your Boat Rental

Lightweight clothing, white, light fabrics, hats, sunglasses, messy hair – it’s the boat look … and we love it. There are some surprising dos and don’ts when dressing for your boat rental. For example, flip flops may not be the best choice for footwear and those fashion shades you bought at the store last week for $10 likely won’t protect your eyes from damaging UV rays. Below we share our top tips for boating fashion (trust us, we know a thing or two).

Loose, Breathable Clothing is Your Best Friend

Clothing that is light, loose and breathable is best for outings on the boat. Initially you might think long sleeves on a boat ride is crazy. It’s hot, isn’t it? Yes, of course, but nothing ruins a boat ride quicker than sunburn. If you’re frequently in the sun, long sleeve clothing can be a long-term plan against sun spots and skin cancer.

Hats, Hats, Hats

There is a hat for just about every style and occasion: baseball cap, fedora, sun hat, panama hat, cowboy hat – the list goes on. Whatever your preference, a hat on a boat is a must. Even with sunscreen you are likely getting more vitamin D than you bargained for and the extra shade around the sensitive parts of your face can go a long way in protecting your skin.

Rash Guards Aren’t Just for Divers

Rashguards are typical for swimmers, surfers and divers to prevent brushing up against sea life or coral that may irritate the skin, but they can also serve as a cover-up from the harsh sun. Check out these new rash guards from Billabong (full and half size) as well as the new Volcom long sleeve rash guards.

Flip Flops Don’t Belong on Boats (Sometimes)

Yes, it makes sense to wear shoes that are easy to get on and off, but flips flops (unless they were made for boating) can make walking on wet ground and stepping onto uneven surfaces difficult and dangerous.

Don’t Forget About Your Eyes!

Sunglasses are a must for boating fashion and functionality. On the water the sun is much brighter because it reflects off of the water’s surface. If you’re not careful you can even burn your corneas, which is, essentially, sunburn in your eyes. Ouch! Costa Del Mar, Ray Ban, Oakley, Maui Jim and Ocean Wave are popular sunglass brands with lenses that will protect your eyes. Those shades you bought last week from Target look great, but they may not be functional for sailing. Ensure your sunglasses have a lense that will protect your eye from UV rays.

Leave Important Jewelry at Home

On a boat jewelry can pose more of a threat than a fashion statement. Rings can get caught in fishing line, necklaces can snag on canopies, and shiny earrings can attract unwanted sea creatures. Not to mention the probability of losing your beloved grandmother’s ring is much greater on a boat. If the jewelry is important to you it’s best to leave it at home. If you need some bling as part of your ensemble stick with big bulky pieces that won’t lose luster and won’t cause stress if they accidently go missing.
